The Alchemy Tap Project presents Beat Science - Music in Motion, a show that revives and reimagines a classic American art form. Featuring some of Seattle's best tap dancers, live music by the excellent Cascade Jazz Quartet, and cutting edge choreography, this is an evening of entertainment that will change the way you see the art of tap dancing.
Beat Science - Music in Motion is an exploration of the possibilities of tap. Beginning with its roots in the world of jazz music, then breaking down the art form to its bare elements, the show culminates with a forward-looking suite of choreography incorporating unique electronic music and influences of ballet and hip hop. With creative use of drumsticks, wooden boxes, and metal chairs (and a healthy dose of comedy), this show promises to be a good time for audiences of all ages.
Directed by Seattle native and former Cirque du Soleil dancer Josh Scribner, the Alchemy Tap Project was founded with the mission of keeping tap dance alive and relevant to future generations. Now in its seventh year, ATP has performed at Town Hall Seattle, Benaroya Hall, Teatro Zinzanni, the Seattle Art Museum, the Walla Walla Dance Festival, and the Northwest Folklife Festival. With Scribner's choreography emphasizing the visual as well as the technical and musical, ATP dancers are trained not just in tap, but in the language of dance as whole; many have strong backgrounds ballet, contemporary, and hip hop, lending the company its unique aesthetic on stage.
Cascade Jazz has been a presence on the Pacific Northwest music scene since 2000, including performances at the Experience Music Project and with the Total Experience Gospel Choir. In addition to regular appearances at music festivals around the region, Cascade Jazz is the house band at the Valley Center Stage in North Bend. Serving up a mix of swinging jazz classics, smooth Latin grooves, and original fusion compositions, this group of talented musicians is a wonderful match for the hard-hitting dancers of the Alchemy Tap Project!
